For church records not on Digitalarkivet, or on microfilm; you will need to contact the respective Parish Minister.  Be aware at that place is a 60-year privacy police in Norway. Practise not ask for information later than that. For information from 1900 forward, you will want to contact the role called "Folkregister" for the surface area in which your ancestor lived. The telephone number is 011 47 2207.  Be aware that Kingdom of norway is eight hours before than the Mountain Time Zone in the United States.  Also, be prepared to prove you are a direct line decendant.

Historical Background [edit | edit source]

There was no separation of church and country in Kingdom of norway earlier 21 May 2012.  Prior to this date church and state were joined.

At that place was not a legally recognized dissenter church in Kingdom of norway until 1845.  The police simply did non let anyone to dissent from the Lutheran Church.  After dissenter churches were accepted in 1845, these congregations nonetheless had to report births and deaths to the local parish priest of the Lutheran Church within one month of these events.  Sometimes we find that children of dissenters were non recorded as the law stated.  Ofttimes a pastor would brand this a very hard visit, trying to persuade or even threaten people to "come back" to the Lutheran Church.  If dissenters lived in a city where they could avoid beingness known past the church building personnel, they sometimes did not comply with this law.

A new deed in 1891 gave some dissenter groups permission to solemnize marriages, and from this fourth dimension until 1919, the different groups were required to report births, deaths and marriages to the local Lutheran Church once a year.  Subsequently 1919 they had to report to the local folkeregister (vital statistics role).

The constabulary did not require a dissenter church building to deposit their records in the land archives unless a congragation was dissolved.  The percentage of dissenters in 1875 was 0.4%, and in 1950 it was 3.76%.

Coverage and Compliance [edit | edit source]

"Modern vital registration began in 1906, just church records date back to the 1600s... If the spousal relationship occurred before October 1, 2004, the spousal relationship document can be obtained from the church or civil authority where the wedlock was solemnized. If the marriage took place later October 1, 2004, the marriage certificate tin be obtained from the Folkeregisteret."[1]
